Jewelry Repair Terms

Last updated: October 2026

By leaving an item with CHC Fine Jewelry, mailing it to us, or approving a repair estimate, you accept these terms. All prices are in US dollars and do not include applicable sales tax.

What we repair

We repair jewelry in gold, silver, and platinum only, whether or not you bought it from us.

Intake & receipt

  • Every item is recorded on a written repair intake form with a description, photos, and the value you declare. In the studio, we fill out the form with you. For mail-in items, you fill it out and send it with your item.
  • We describe items by appearance (for example, "yellow metal ring with white stone"). We do not test metal or identify stones unless an appraisal or testing is quoted separately.
  • Please keep your receipt. It is required to pick up your item.

Evaluation, estimates & approval

  • The evaluation is free and has no obligation. For mail-in items, shipping to our studio is paid by the customer. Listed prices are starting prices for labor; added metal, stones, or parts are charged extra.
  • We give you a written estimate before any work begins. Work starts only after your approval in writing (message, email, or signed receipt).
  • If we find additional problems during the repair (for example, worn prongs or a cracked shank), we contact you for approval before doing extra work.
  • Estimates are valid for 7 days, since metal prices change.
  • If you cancel after work has started, you pay for the labor and materials already used.

Condition of your item

  • Older or worn jewelry may have hidden problems: thin or cracked metal, porosity, weak solder joints, worn prongs, or earlier repairs. We are not responsible if these existing problems appear or worsen during a repair.
  • Plated or hollow jewelry may be damaged by heat or polishing, and plating may come off. We may decline these items.
  • Polishing and repairs can remove small amounts of metal, fine engraving, and texture.
  • Hallmarks, stamps, and engravings, including inside ring bands, may be lost during sizing or repair.
  • Color matching is not guaranteed. White gold is often rhodium plated, and rhodium wears over time.

Stones

  • Stones may need to be removed or reset to complete the work.
  • Some stones can chip, crack, or change color under heat, pressure, or cleaning, especially emeralds, opals, pearls, tanzanite, and other treated or fragile stones. When you approve a repair on these items, you accept this risk.
  • We are not responsible for stones that are already chipped, cracked, or loose when the item is received. These are noted on your receipt when visible.

Ring sizing

  • Some rings cannot be resized, or can only be resized within limits, such as eternity bands and tension settings. We will tell you before we start.
  • Sizing a ring with stones around the band may loosen or require resetting those stones, which is quoted separately.

Payment & pickup

  • Payment is due at pickup. Larger repairs may require a deposit before work begins.
  • Pickups are by appointment and require your receipt and a valid ID. Only the customer, or a person authorized in writing, may pick up the item.
  • Please check your item at pickup. Once you leave the studio, the item is considered accepted.

Mail-in repairs

  • Before shipping, email photos and a description of your item to info@chcfinejewelry.com for a free evaluation, and include the signed repair intake form in your package.
  • Customer-provided information is not verified. The description, photos, and declared value you provide for a mail-in item are not verified by CHC Fine Jewelry. When your package arrives, we open it, photograph the contents, and record their condition. That arrival record is the official record of what we received. If the contents do not match your form, we contact you before any work begins.
  • Ship your item to us fully insured, with tracking and signature confirmation. We are not responsible for items lost or damaged before they reach our studio.
  • If you approve the repair, return shipping with insurance and signature confirmation is included in your repair quote.
  • If you decline the repair, return shipping, insurance, and signature confirmation are paid by the customer, and we return your item once that payment is received.
  • All returns are shipped with signature confirmation; higher-value items may require adult signature. Once the carrier confirms delivery to the address you provided, we are not responsible for loss or theft.

Unclaimed items

  • When your repair is finished, we notify you in writing that the item is ready.
  • Items not picked up within 30 days of that notice may be charged a storage fee.
  • Items not picked up and paid for within 90 days of that notice may be sold to cover repair charges, as permitted by New York Lien Law.

90-day repair warranty

  • Every repair is guaranteed for 90 days from the day the item goes back to you, covering only the exact work we performed.
  • It does not cover new damage, a problem elsewhere on the piece, normal wear, a stone we did not set or tighten, or any work done by someone else after us.
  • Polishing, plating, and rhodium are surface finishes that wear with daily use and are not covered.

Liability

  • While your item is in our care, our liability is limited to the value stated on your receipt. We recommend insuring valuable jewelry with your own policy.
  • Our total liability for any repair is never more than that declared value.

General

  • We may decline any repair at our discretion.
  • These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York. Disputes will be handled in the courts of New York County, New York.
  • If any part of these terms is found invalid, the rest remains in effect.
