What you receive

  • A Rhino file (.3dm) so the model can be edited later.
  • An STL file ready to send to a 3D printer.
  • Screenshots for approval at each stage, so you see the model before it is finished.
  • Correct sizes for ring size, stone sizes, and overall dimensions, agreed with you up front.

Photorealistic renders are a separate service. Ask for them with your quote if you need images for a client or a listing.

Why a bench jeweler's CAD is different

Plenty of people can build a model that looks right on screen. Fewer know what happens to it in the flask. A model drawn without bench experience often comes back with walls too thin to hold up, prongs too small to bend over a stone, seats cut for a stone size that does not exist, or a shank that cracks at the shoulder.

We have spent more than 30 years casting, setting, and finishing pieces at the bench, so the model accounts for what happens next: metal thickness that survives casting and polishing, prongs and bezels sized for the stones you actually have, seats that let a setter work, and enough material left for a clean finish. If something in your design will not work in metal, we tell you before you pay for printing and casting, not after.

How it works

  1. Send your briefA sketch, a photo, a reference piece, or a written description. Include ring or piece size, stone sizes and shapes if you have them, and the metal you plan to use.
  2. We quote the jobYou get a price and a timeline for your specific model before any work starts.
  3. First screenshotsWe send images of the model in progress so you can check the shape and proportions early, while changes are still quick.
  4. RevisionsYou tell us what to change and we adjust. We keep going until the model matches what you asked for.
  5. Final filesOn approval you receive the .3dm and .stl files, ready to print and cast.

The files are yours

Once your model is approved and paid for, the files are yours to use. Print them, cast them, and produce the piece with whichever caster or manufacturer you choose. We do not resell your design or reuse it for another client.

Turnaround

Most models are ready within a few days of an agreed brief, and you normally see first screenshots well before that. Complex work, such as a full pave layout or an invisible setting, takes longer. We confirm your timeline in writing when we quote the job, so tell us early if you are working to a deadline.

What affects the price

  • Complexity. A plain band is quick. A pave layout with dozens of stones, or an invisible setting, takes far more modeling time.
  • How clear the brief is. A precise sketch with dimensions is faster to model than a rough idea we develop with you.
  • Revisions. Normal back-and-forth is included in the quote. A change of direction partway through is a new job.
  • Extras. Photorealistic renders, and printing or casting, are quoted separately.

Who makes your model

CHC Fine Jewelry is a family-owned studio and workshop in Midtown Manhattan. Our founder has spent more than 30 years at the bench and does the modeling himself. When you send a brief, you are speaking with the person who will build your file, and who has cast and set pieces from models like it.

Good to know

  • CAD files are a digital product made to your brief, so they are final sale once delivered. That is why you approve screenshots at each stage before the final files are released.

CAD design questions

What file formats do you deliver?

A Rhino file (.3dm) so the model can be edited later, and an STL file ready for 3D printing. If your printer or caster needs a different format, ask us when you request your quote.

Can I take the file to my own caster?

Yes. That is what this service is for. Once the model is approved and paid for, the files are yours and you can produce the piece wherever you like.

How much does a CAD model cost?

It depends on the complexity of the piece and how detailed your brief is. Send us your sketch or reference photos and we will quote your specific model before any work begins.

How many revisions do I get?

Normal back-and-forth to get the model right is part of the quote. We send screenshots as we go so changes happen early, when they are quick. A complete change of direction partway through is quoted as new work.

Can you model a piece from a photograph?

Often, yes. Send the clearest photos you have, from more than one angle if possible, along with any dimensions you know. We will tell you how closely it can be matched before you commit.

Will the model actually cast properly?

That is the point of having a bench jeweler build it. We model with real wall thickness, prong sizes, and stone seats, and we tell you if part of your design will not survive casting, printing, or setting.

Do you include renders?

Photorealistic renders are a separate service. You do get approval screenshots of the model as standard. Ask about renders when you request your quote.

Can you print and cast it as well?

Yes. Tell us when you ask for your quote and we will price the model, the printing, and the casting together.

Do you work with clients outside New York?

Yes. The whole service is handled online, so we work with jewelers, designers, and customers anywhere. Files are delivered by email or a download link.
